Mars has just entered retrograde, suddenly reversing its course across the sky. While we're passing by the red planet this year, it will look to us as though Mars is moving up and down. As you continue pulling away, the car resumes its forward motion.
Right as you pull along side and pass it, however, the car appears to move backwards for just a moment. As you approach the slower car, it is clearly moving in the same direction you are. All planets show retrograde motion when viewed from Earth with respect to background stars.
